Successful Bearing Transplant
Well on Sunday with the help of my friend Jason I successfuly replaced the wheel bearing hub assembly on our car. After seeing what the repair place wanted to charge I decided to go it alone. So with my trusty Hanes repair manual in hand and all the right tools (amazing how much better that works!) I decided to do it myself.
It really wasn’t that bad. The components are actually pretty simple so long as you have every tool you need. If was fun to get hands on and learn a bit more about the suspension and drive axle.
While I was at it I corrected the stop position of my wiper blades the shop had messed up when they replaced a crank arm a while back.
The other thing which turned out to rather funny was a noise in the ac/heat vents. It sounded like the fan was broken in some way. Basically lots of noise and no airflow. I had to remove the glove box to get at the fan and what do I see as I pull it out? A bunch of ATM deposit envelopes half into the fan half eaten by the fan! They had managed to slip over the top of the glovebox and slit into a space leading into the fan! They were the cause of the noise (being eaten) and the blocking of the airflow. Turned out to be a nice cheap fix :)
Just two more things to figure out now on the car and it will be good as new again. The windshield wash motor isn’t running, it’s either dead or lost it’s power connection. Just need to pull out the battery and a cross member to get at it to check it out. The other remaining issue is the same blower motor that I thought the fan was bad on. It has a different issue too and that’s that it only works on 4 or 5. I think the fan is ok, just the lower power setting isn’t getting power I think. It does have 2 fuses going to it so I think one of the connections just has a problem. I’ll have to half pull it out to check it out and that’s another weekend project. I think I’ll have to remove the passenger seat to actually have the space to get under there to pull it out (yuck!).
Oh well, it’s good learning and a heck of a lot cheaper. Saved about $300 doing the wheel bearing job myself!
