The Trouble with 3 Year Olds
The trouble with 3 year olds is, they aren’t really just 3 year olds. I’m entirely convinced that my 3 year old is actually a teenager trapped in a very small body. Not only has she stumbled upon the Book of Universal Knowledge (yes, she knows everything now), she has mastered the combination Sigh-Eye Roll-”Maaaahm.”
This puts me in the position of marvelling at her new found independance and beating my head against the wall when she refuses to cooperate with the most innocent (or necessary) requests.
Her latest Lidia-ism (one which I hear many times a day)? ” No, I do it own mine.” Translation: I want to do it on my own.
Yet, somehow, the instant *I* suggest she do something on her own (like, oh, let’s say putting on the jammies), we find ourselves in the middle of a nuclear meltdown. The child can put her jammies on. She has proved it time and time again. However, each night before bed, the battle begins and she impresses us with her ability to leap into the air, lock her body into the form of a board and slam down onto the floor, chest first. All this, of course, is combined with a cry that is sure to let the neighbors know that Mom and Dad are, in fact, beating the child (or so one would think).
Much of this nuclear testing began with the appearance of the baby brothers. Not so unexpected, but no easier to handle when one is also juggling 2 fussy 2 month olds. Normal? Yes. Cute? No. I will be happy when my 3 year old is a little less radio active.
That being said, upon the arrival of her brothers, she was gifted a book about Olivia, a very active little girl pig with grand dreams of being a ballerina. As Olivia’s mother tucks her in, she tells her, “You know, you really wear me out. But I love you anyway.” To which Olivia responds, “I love you anyways, too.” I couldn’t have said it better myself.
The other day, while I was changing diapers, Lidia did something or other that exasperated me. I sighed that exasperated sigh, to which Lidia replied, “I love you anyway, Mom.”
Yep, definately more than just a 3 year old.
